Vitamin C: It’s fairly rare to find a deficiency in Vitamin C, since so many processed foods are already fortified, but taking extra means your immune system will be stronger. Signs that you are lacking in this important vitamin include fatigue, bleeding gums and slow healing of wounds.

Vitamin D: The lack of this vitamin has been named as a cause of certain kinds of cancer, such as breast and colon cancer. Less severe symptoms of deficiency include twitching muscles, sleep issues (particularly in small children), pain in the joints and osteoporosis.

Vitamin E: Not enough Vitamin E usually results in eye problems, especially a limit to how far you can move your eyes upwards. Severe deficiency could result in blindness. Lack of this vitamin can also cause fertility issues, miscarriages, as well as problems with the liver, brain and bone marrow.

Vitamin K: Anyone low on this vitamin will find that they bruise easily and tend to bleed more than normal with small cuts and scratches. Frequent nosebleeds could be a sign that you are low on Vitamin K.

How do you know when something is good for you? What are the common factors that determine whether or not food is healthy or unhealthy? Here is a list that will help distinguish.

General List to Distinguish Good and Bad Nutrition

Good nutrition has:

*Natural and wholesome foods: E.g. Beans, nuts, fruit and vegetables…

*Organic farm produce.

*Food with little or no heat treatment, where the molecular shape of the vitamins and enzymes are not altered and are therefore able to take part effectively in the body’s metabolic processes for normal functioning.

*Less starchy and grainy foods.

*Clean water, preferably from a mountain stream containing minerals.

*Fresh fruit juices. Not too much, so that insulin levels are not too high.

*Inclusions of vitamin and mineral supplements. These are excellent if there are any dietary deficiencies.

Bad nutrition has:

*Factory processed with artificial flavouring, chemicals, preservatives, and high trans-fats. A frequency of these things are capable of doing much damage to the body over time.

*Intensive farm produce having, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides and other contaminants.

* Factory food manufacture can involve high or low temperatures in processing. This causes the nutrition value to be greatly reduced. Sometimes the nutrition value can be next to nothing like, for example, refined sugar. *Too much starchy, grainy food. Health risks include: Obesity, diabetes and mood swings…

*Tap water has such chemicals such as fluoride and chloride.

*Drinks such as soda pops, cola, alcoholic pops…commercial drinks laden with too much sugar and containing potentially harmful ingredients like phosphates and aspartame

*Nutritional deficiencies may cause many illnesses like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and leaky gut syndrome…

Like I say this is not an exhaustive account but a general list. The main thing for now is to understand the underlying principles. I cannot emphasise this enough.

How does good nutrition work?

Nutrition is required for the body’s metabolic processes. If it is good, then the body will run efficiently. Consider the running of a car. In this analogy, if the petrol used is a good grade then the car will run well. If the petrol is a poor grade, then it will run sluggishly. On the long-term it may cease to function. The same very much so applies to the body when it comes to bad nutrition. If the body is fed on junk food and poor hydration (lack of water), then it may well become sluggish. If this continues on the long-term then disease could manifest and result in death.

1 tsp. honey

1/2 cup fuller’s earth

1 tsp. of apricot essential oil for normal skin.

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and apply to face.  Wait 15 minutes and rinse it off with cold water.

Vitamin B’s – B3 is known as niacin and B-5 is known as pantothenic acid.  Vitamin B plays in important part in your overall health and in your skin care regimen. B-Complex Vitamins support health of the skin and hair.  The American Academy of Dermatology cites vitamins B-3 and B-5 as popular additions to skin products, mostly because they help hold moisture in. In a study (funded by Procter and Gamble), B vitamins were shown to be effective exfoliates; that is, they removed dead surface skin cells that clump up and make skin texture appear dull.  Another study was done testing B5, B3 and Vitamin E on skin with rosaceous, skin treated with this product experienced a 36% increase in hydration, although it’s not clear if this improvement was from vitamin E or the B vitamins.

Avocado Mask Recipe

1 egg yolk

Half avocado

1tbls honey

Peel and mash the avocado with a fork.. In separate bowl, mix the egg yolk and honey together, then and add to the pulp. Use the mixture immediately, applying to your face, neck and shoulders. Leave for at least 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Finish with a toner and moisturizer. Avocado contains:  Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B1 (thiamine) Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Niacin, Folate, Pantothenic Acid, and Vitamin B6.

Vitamin C – also known as L-ascorbic acid and its greatest benefit in skin care is it antioxidants to repair sun damage and defend against free radicals.  Additionally, Vitamin C enhances repairing sun damage and enhances the production of collagen. 

Vitamin C facial serum recipe:

1/4 teaspoon Vitamin C also known as L-ascorbic acid. Do not use vitamin C tablets or calcium Ascorbate.

1 teaspoon glycerin

1 teaspoon water (preferably distilled)

Dissolve the l-ascorbic acid in 1 teaspoon of water in small glass sterilized container. Make sure the acid has dissolved before proceeding. Add 1 teaspoon glycerin and mix well. Apply once a day, preferably at night and increase to twice daily if your skin tolerates the serum. Store in dark container and refrigerate. Light will degrade vitamin C, therefore, it is important to watch for yellowing of your serum, this indicates that the vitamin C is oxidized. Once oxidized the vitamin C has lost it usefulness as a facial serum that delivers nutrients to the skin. As it undergoes oxidation the ascorbic acid takes on a yellowish tinge, so it is important to check your creams or serums before you put them on your face, and if there is any yellow discoloration, discard. Vitamin C in skin care offers many benefits such as reducing blotchiness, stimulates collagen, reduces fine lines and wrinkles and also protect against sun damage.
